Friday night movies in Des Moines area

Des Moines residents will have plenty to do this summer, thanks to events happening all around the metro area. One of the most unique is a free outdoor summer film series happening at Colby Park in Windsor Heights. The park is ideally located in the middle of the city so it’s a great choice for residents in all suburbs, as well as downtown. The first movie night is Friday, June 11, when they’ll be playing “Field of Dreams.”

The event is family-friendly and a great way for parents and children to unwind at the end of a long week. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks – for a great event that doesn’t require them to spend a lot of money. Kids can also take part in several fun events like face painting and a raffle drawing. And, there will be free popcorn and soft drinks available for a minimal charge.

The Park, located behind Wal-Mart on 73rd Street, can fit up to 1,200 people. The park is currently undergoing a 20-year plan that will renovate areas of the park, add a baseball field and community center, which is scheduled to open up on July 26. For more information about Colby Park’s summer movie series, visit the Windsor Heights community website.
