Top Des Moines Weekend Events

As summer winds down, there are several events happening in the Des Moines area that will help you ease into the fall season. Here are a few of the top events happening during the end of August:

SummerFest at Principal Park
Friday & Saturday, August 27 – August 28
4 p.m. – 12 midnight

Check out this family-friendly event at Principal Park. On Friday and Saturday, the stadium will be home to eight different bands on two stages, a variety of games and activities, food, and drinks. Headliner bands include Toaster on Friday and Faculty Lounge on Saturday. Tickets are just $6 each, which includes a complimentary beer. Wacky Wallaby at Blank Park Zoo
Friday, August 27
5 – 8 p.m.

Wacky Wallaby gives you the perfect opportunity to visit the Blank Park Zoo if you haven’t had time this summer. The zoo will be filled with family-friendly music, craft activities, and animal enrichment demonstrations. You can also stroll through the zoo and check out their many animals. The event is free with regular admission – with it, guests can dine in the Safari Grill and shop at the Wild Things Gift Shop. For more information, check out the Blank Park Zoo website.

Summerset Sunday Tunes
Sunday, August 29
3 – 6 p.m.

For a relaxing Sunday afternoon, check out Summerset Sunday Tunes at Summerset Winery in Indianola. Here, you can sample the variety of wines, purchase cheese and cracker plates, and enjoy the live music. Admission is $3 per person or $10 per car load. You can purchase bottles of Summerset winery at the event, but it’s requested that no outside alcohol be brought in.

Dueling Pianos & Great Southern Bank Fireworks
Sunday, August 29
5 p.m. – dusk

The Jordan Creek Lake District is proud to host Tony Bohnenkamp and Jared Hall as their featured dueling pianos. The combination of these musicians promises an exciting Sunday evening. After the free concert, attendees can stay for fireworks that will begin and dusk.
